The Neighborhood

You know, not everything in LegoLand is candy colored sweetness. There are real hard working folk in some neighborhood. Like my neighborhood, Southside near the Docks. It's a tough neighborhood. The people who live there as tough as the ABS that they make the sidewalks out of.

Hello I'm Norman Stitz, and I'd just like to show you around a little.
IMG_1270.jpg
Now this is old Caplan's Plumbing Supply. Beautiful Sign, eh?
IMG_1237.jpg
When it was lit up it was a sight to see. This faucet dripped, dripped, dripped in an neon-animated come on for people to remember Caplan's when they needed plumbing done.

Last time I saw it was lit was some time in the 70s. Some talk about putting it in a museum.

IMG_1240.jpg
You can see the burglar bars are locked up tight...not that I'd think there'd be anything left to steal.

IMG_1229.jpg

Even the back lots become nothing more than a home for weeds, discarded auto parts, and empty 40 oz beer bottles.

IMG_1230.jpg
But not everything here is gone. Not by a longshot.
IMG_1233.jpg
Why look right next door is Sal's Fish. Been there since 1938 and still going strong!
IMG_1262.jpg
Looks like they're open,
IMG_1264.jpg
Lets take a look inside.
IMG_1261.jpg
Nice selection in the cooler today. Mr Tanaka is there buying supplies for his Sushi place.
IMG_1254.jpg
He tries to negotiate even a better price than he's getting.
IMG_1246.jpg
But Christoforo doesn't budge. He's used to Tanaka's antics.
IMG_1267.jpg
Hmmm crates of Eel, salmon with skin, and my favorite, Octopus.
IMG_1248.jpg
But Mr Giordano is interested in getting a small barrel of Oysters. He's supposed to see both his wife and his Gumah this evening ...and just might need that extra fuel...heh heh.
IMG_1256.jpg
Meanwhile, over by the scale, Vito and Fedele converse as to whether they got enough for the big card game tonight.
IMG_1249.jpg
Fedele says "If it isn't enough Vito, and the boss is pissed...It's on your shoulders!"

IMG_1251.jpg
Ahh there's Sal Junior. He took over in 86 when Sal passed away. God rest his soul. He's carving up a big old Tuna with that industrial saw. With that, he can take any dead fish and cut it down into bite sized chunks and make it disappear. Useful skill that is. So useful he doesn't have to pay into the normal neighborhood protection fund.

IMG_1252.jpg
Aww look the smell of the fish has brought in this little scamp. Isn't that cute.
IMG_1259.jpg
I guess we better get going, but don't slip on that ice on the way out!

IMG_1243.jpg
Close the loading dock behind you.

Before you go, you can tell that seafood was what was mind when Sal's was built...they even put it in the very bricks themselves.

Builders notes:

The entire rear of the building opens

And the interior can be slid out and altered at will.

That's really nice. I like how you told a story with it.

Nice work. I think I really like this new drawer style of interior. I will have to experiment with it.

Excellent work NIGELTTF. I really like the faucet sign. Any chance you have photos of the real sign? If so how about any of it when it was operational? I miss the days when companies used neon to advertise themselves. The company I work for had a great neon sign, but sadly time has taken it's toll, and it has not worked for year and likely never will again.

Nice MOC and nice storyline, too. The only thing I would add is a dog sniffing the fire hydrant. :-)

This is really amazing! The slide-out interior is a great idea that I am going to have to experiment with. Great job.
