Minifigure Series 1 vs. Series 2

Post by Mantisking » Tue Sep 14, 2010 9:02 am

I don't know about the rest of you but I'm not as interested in the second series as I was the first one. I feel that the first series had more interesting, and fun, figures than the current run.

Here's a list of the first series.
Caveman
Cheerleader
Circus Clown
Deep Sea Diver
Demolition Dummy
Cowboy
Forestman
Skater
Spaceman
Magician
Ninja
Nurse
Robot
Super Wrestler
Tribal Hunter
Zombie
The only ones I'm not interested in are the Caveman (which I ended up with anyway), Cheerleader, Circus Clown, and Skater.

Here's the list for the second series.
Disco Dude
Explorer
Karate Master
Lifeguard
Maraca Man
Mime
Pharaoh
Pop Star
Ringmaster
Skier
Spartan Warrior
Surfer
Traffic Cop
Vampire
Weightlifter
Witch
The only ones I'm interested in for this set are Explorer, Karate Master, Mime, Pharaoh, Spartan Warrior, and Vampire. I might be able to turn the weightlifter into an opponent for the Luchador, and the Skier is only interesting for his accessories.

Anyone else feel this way?

Don't really care for either since find them lackluster at best, but some usefull parts though.

Nope. I liked Series 2 better than Series 1. While I liked both of them a lot I thought that the second series was more interesting. I had a lot more minifigures I wanted from the second series than I did the first.

I like them both. But I think series 1 made everybody want more. Only time will tell how well the next few series will do. Will people lose interest? maybe.

I find the over-all figures in s1 more interesting and fun (Spaceman, Ninja, Robot, Gunslinger and Zombie, in particular), but the individual parts of s2 more useful, especially the new pieces like the Pop Star's hair, the Spartan's spear, the Karate Guy's trophy, and the Skier's poles.

It's funny, because I originally thought I wouldn't even want an entire set of s2 much less the full set +multiples I have now. I'm kicking myself for not getting another full set of s1, though, because my daughter is enthralled with s2, and I wish I had a full set to give to her. As it stands, between to two of us we have a LOT more of s2 than I do of s1. We're using them as treats for good behavior, she's got a full set, but only has about 6 or 7 open as of right now.

I've been pretty good. Mind tossing me a Spartan and a Lifeguard? I don't want to order them online from someone and my Target sold out already.

HAH, you have to get 10 stickers on your chart, first. You get a sticker for being good in the bath, going to sleep without complaint, bringing your dishes into the kitchen, playing outside for an hour, or having a whole day without TV, for instance ;)

Actually, though, while I'm trying to find all the Spartans I can, I have a few extra Lifeguards my wife mistook for Pop Stars... I'll post my extras in the B/S/T forum once I get back home (I'm on vacation this week) and one has your name on it.

Eventually, yes. I remember when Magic The Gathering came out, and it was even hotter than this, even with a smaller pool of fans. That was in 1993. Now you can get them in any Walmart and the level of excitement for a new release is tepid at best.

But they still sell, even if people aren't waiting for the truck to unload anymore.

I predict that each successive release will be more numerous, and less "hot" until lego will realize, too late, that it flooded the market. However they will have made some pretty serious coin by that point. They might cut the release freqence back to once or twice a year, and it will be a common object in the lego store as the impulse item of the twenty teens.

Maybe... although LEGO generally seems to make few missteps (Ben 10 being the current one, with a close runner-up in Price of Persia) so they may run middle-of-the-road with this one and keep it semi-HTF, keeping up demand by keeping supply close to the best sales numbers. They might reach a series where they produce more than the demand will consume, and you can bet they'll reduce the production run for the next series to somewhere between the preceding two series, in order to maintain the buzz.

Actually their new Heroes line ( a new name for Bionicle) is doing far worse then Prince of Persia but not as bad as Ben 10 Prince of Persia is actually a hot seller for the rare and hard to find items (Like Camels) and Dastan is just perfect for my Centaurs here:

Oh, yeah, I'm not disparaging the PoP line, I actually really like it. The camels, ostriches, minifig accessories, rare pieces, rare colors and figures themselves are HUGE selling points... but to a small subset of LEGO fans. It just seems to not be as huge a license as LEGO antcipated

IDK if you can really determine whether or not Heroes is doing poorly - it's not been out long enough to really have any data. Bionicle, while generally loathed among minifig scale LEGO fans, had/has a HUGE and devoted following. I can imagine Heroes growing the same kind of cult. There are also definitely a lot of MOCers out there who pride themselves on utilizing Bionicle pieces in unique ways in their creations.

I base it on resell value, overall Bionicle resell value is about 1/4 of that of LEGO of the same weight.

the only thing that kept Bionicle alive was LEGO brought out new stuff every year, problem is 9 out of 10 sets that would reach the lowest clearance price in stores and still be on the shelves collecting dust is Bionicle, the following for Bionicle is not as big as you think it is.

I picked up "The Fight for the Dagger" (#7571) yesterday and it's helped a lot with an Egyptian themed MOC I'm working on.

Resell value is not relevant to the Lego Corporations profits. Bioncle was that main thing keeping it afloat in the late 90s/early 2000s. Sure, there were plenty in the clearance bin, but actually it is nothing compared to what sold. Bioncle was a clear hit for TLC, but given that the amount the were going to the clearance bin started to be noticable by 2008, I guess they made the right decision to retire the line.

Oh my god, you make me feel old now. I remember when magic came out. it wasn't popular here. Plus it was really expensive. A year or two later, it caught on. Those cards are worth alot of money these days.

Anyway, you can see now that series 2 is worth less than series 1 already. You can buy a box on ebay for retail. $120. Sets average about $50 for series 2. So it's already starting.
