What was your first LEGO set?

So what was it? I'm pretty old so for me it was 6363 Auto Repair Shop, I'm pretty sure that's what it was or at least that's the first set that I remember owning. It was released in 1980 but I think I received it couple years later....

I think it was Horse Cart.

I wish they still made those round classic shields. Man looking at these brings back memories. I remember rebuilding that Siege Tower over and over into different castles (although it didn't have all that many pieces).

In my first years of college (dark ages) I was so busy with work and school (and poor and consumed with new found freedom of living on my own) that I didn't have time or money for LEGO. The only two purchases that I made during those days were the 5918 Scorpion Tracker http://brickset.com/sets/5918-1/Scorpion-Tracker and 6033 Treasure Transport http://brickset.com/sets/6033-1

Years later it was a clearanced Exo-Force set (and my infant son with the purchase of duplo Knights Castle 4777 http://brickset.com/sets/4777-1/Knights-Castle) that brought me out of the dark ages.

My first set was 6045 Ninja Ambush from the original ninja theme.
I built, took apart and re-built it so many times that I could build it without instructions.

I'm aging myself also. My first set was 575: Coast Guard Station. I still remember getting it for Christmas from my grandparents

I remember seeing the Ninja sets and thinking that they were just the coolest ever (ninja masks, samurai helmets, ninja weapons plus pirate guns!!!).

I think I had the horse cart also StClair, round shields? Awesome, even if the handle broke off you could still use it as a gun

and of course I remember the tower that you also had. One thing I remember about my first lego set is that I took the red minifig out with my mom somewhere and I lost the legs I think or torso but I think legs. That was a tragedy, nowadays kids have tons of Legos but, beginning of 80's? Back in post communist but still very communist Poland?... I think I should buy my 6363 again :)

I actually DID use the broken shields handles for a gun (back in the days before LEGO released a variety of guns... even before pirate theme was released). Funny that you did the same although I'm guessing lots of other people did the same. While looking up info on these same sets I was thinking the same... maybe I should buy these. After seeing current prices though I'm sure I'll probably pass although I may rebuild them as much as possible with parts that I do have.

Looks like you are little younger brickbuilder :) yours came out in '98. And you, dude4life, produced in '78, I was one year old at that time, you StClair must be close to me :) of course depending at what age you got them and where are you from, I'm sure Poland was 'behind' so I'm not sure what year my set was purchased, shield handles for guns? So funny :) everything was priceless :) and the only lego face? Smiley face. 2 dots for eyes and a smile :)
It's amazing to me that so many people have something to do with lego on different continents, people that are different age, and people in different times in the past, some of us in '70, some in '80, '90, and so on.....great toy.

^I was 10 when I got my first LEGO set, but I had lots of other building toys before that time (Lincoln Logs, Tinker toys, Erector, Duplo and many more).

This is the first set that I can remember. I know for sure I had one or two city sets before that. I was 9 when I received this from my uncle when we moved. I really wanted a walkman that my sister got. But that really opened things up as time when on.

I can't remember exactly what it was so I wasn't able to search out a photo but as a child I only had one tiny set that consisted of one small car, a minifigure and a wrench and maybe a crow bar? I'm guessing he was a fix it kind of guy. I've kept basically every toy I've ever had and for some reason now that I've been looking at LEGO again since I have kids now, I can't find that set. My husband got out his childhood set and it was mostly primary colors and some knights. I guess he's a little more organized than I am that he found it :)

Eta my first set would have been from the 80s.

Thanks but it was actually an even smaller set, like the crowbar was half the size of the vehicle :). I will have to go searching next time I visit my parents :)

I didnt think they had crowbars back in 80's, wasn't it only hammer, wrench and walkie-talkie....

I looked at the crow bar and you're right, I didn't have anything like that. The closest set I could find to what I had was this

I don't recall having the bucket loader part, but it had that roll bar in the back and the two tools, but I also haven't seen it since childhood, so the memory is a bit foggy :)
It was fun looking at all of the sets from the 80s though!

Eta I think I was confusing the wrench screwdriver combo as a crow bar, the minifig Accessory Tool Spanner / Screwdriver

Not sure, but looking at the catalog, I had many sets from 1977 which doesn't make sense because I was 0 at the time. Not sure how long each of those were in production, but I remember between 5-14, I amassed a large collection. The catalog was smaller back then so I had most of the sets released during that time. :) Thanks mom&dad.

my first set was a Lego/Samsonite Large Basic Set (1961 , #708 ) which I got as a Christmas gift in 1964.

The above were the only Lego sets I had during my childhood- I stopped playing with Lego around 1969. I gave away what was left of my Lego collection in 1999 to my nephew when he got a Robotic Invention System 1.0. I did not own another Lego set until 2009 when I bought a Lego Mindstorm NXT 2.0 for myself. I have a house full of Lego now.
