[MOC] Remote Controlled Technic V22 Osprey

Post by Eddieslowhand1 » Mon May 04, 2015 7:15 pm

Hey folks. I wanted to share a recent project of mine, my Technic V22 Osprey!

The model is about 22 inches from Nose to Tail and has a wingspan of about 23 inches, and it is fairly accurate in terms of scale to the real aircraft. It was primarily built from pieces from (42009) Mobile Crane MK II and (43020) Remote-Controlled VOLVO L350F Wheel Loader. The model contains about 3000 pieces, 4 motors, 2 IR sensors, and is remote controlled. It took me about 50 hours to create.

The motors drive the model forward and backward via 4 wheels. The rotors are tied to the drive system and spin when model is moving. A servo motor controls a single wheel at the front of the model to steer.

A small motor opens and closes the ramp door at the rear of the model.

A medium motor drives conversion of the nacelles from hover mode to conversion mode. The nacelles cannot rotate all the way into airplane mode because the rotors would hit the ground, much like the real aircraft.

I added manual controls for the other control surfaces on the model, including flaps:

And manual controls for the rear rudders and elevator:

Lastly, here is a video showing off the operation of the model.

There are several things that I'd like to improve if I redid this model, chief among them making the battery box accessible. I will have to take a good chunk of the model apart to replace the batteries. There are also some gearing improvements that I would like to make in order to keep the rotor drive smooth for longer periods of time; it degrades after a few minutes of use. This can be heard in the video.

I really enjoyed building this model and I hope you enjoyed it as well. Looking forward to my next project!

I really appreciate getting the front page feature. Thanks to the mods for doing that and all of the support!

I just took this monster apart earlier this week so I have pieces for my next project.
