jefflord wrote:I received most of the rest of my B2G1 free order today ... I'm just waiting on one more set.

Appx half of my sets arrived in plain boxes with air pillows inside to cushion the sets. All of the plain boxes were the same size, but the number of sets inside varied from 1 to 3. Though it was wasteful packaging (and not the way Amazon would ever do it), all of the sets shipped in this manner arrived in very good shape.

The other half of my sets arrived in the boxes Lego uses when they ship sets to TRU (you may have seen these in a store aisle sometime). It appears that TRU staff simply relabeled these boxes and sent them on to me. Unfortunately, these boxes do not contain any padding. They apparently are designed to fit various Lego sets quite tightly, which I'm guessing works for Lego at a wholesale level. But I don't think these boxes were meant to be used for retail commercial shipments via shippers like UPS or FedEx. It is just a hunch, but I suspect the Lego company would not be very happy to learn that TRU shipped out some of its sets this way.

I received 5 of these boxes. The flaps on 3 of them had not been resealed and were held together only by a sticker packet that held my invoice. Fortunately, the sets are so tightly packed within the boxes that there was no real danger they would fall out. The corners of 2 of the 5 boxes were crushed. The bottom side of a third box was also crushed. And the large side of 2 of the boxes was partially collapsed, as if a very heavy but smaller box had been placed on top of it.

My hunch is that these boxes were pristine and undamaged when they arrived at TRU's facilities. That is pure conjecture ... I don't have any evidence for it, so I could be wrong. And I'm trying hard to be objective and not just a knee-jerk TRU basher. But I'm not going to make excuses for them either. And though it is not evidence of what happened this time, the sets I have received from orders with Lego.com are among the best packaged goods I have ever received from any company.

I'm going to return 4 of the 10 sets that arrived in these boxes. 2 of the 4 damaged boxes are badly crushed and look like the sort of thing you would expect to see on a heavily discounted "as is/damaged goods" shelf.

This is probably a lot more info than anyone wanted, but I thought I would add it to help fill out the record that has been built in this thread. Let me know if you have any questions.
Same here. Half of our shipment in the plain boxes was fine....4 out of the 6 Vampire Castles in the Lego boxes were terribly crushed. We don't sell complete sets, so it really does not matter, but this seems to be the TRU way now!

@jefflord,
If you can post pictures of the damaged boxes, that'd be interesting for all of us. It seems like in order to get a decent (not great) deal out of TRU, the followings must happen all together:
1) Promo/ad to pop up (b1g1 half, b2g1f, %off, etc)
2) TRU.com & CS actually honors the ad as it is interpretted by a customer (again, not OUR job to figure out what they mean with the ad in the newspaper)
3) Price is close to actual MSRP, not TRU's jacked-up prices
4) Order does not get canceled after being placed
5) Boxes received undamaged or acceptable condition

We might have a better chance of winning a scratch lottery for some quick bucks than to have all of the above happen at the same time lol.

Don't forget, if you get a damaged box, you can always return and get another one sent out.

If it's important to you, you should NEVER accept a damaged box if you get one. Call CS, tell them the order number, they'll give you a return label and then you drop off at a UPS place (or your drive). You don't have to pay for shipping either way. Honestly, this is the one thing TRU CS is actually good at.

Oh, and Jefflord, preach on brother.

Then at the end in really small print they should write "suckers".

Oder update:

My TRU order arrived today in excellent condition.

The order was for Harry Potter Hogwarts Castle 4842 x3.

invoice is correct.

I placed the order in the wee hours of morning the day the sale went live. (remember how for a few hours the sale wasnt working at all? then for a bit both sales stacked?)

The order arrived in 2 separate boxes. one package was padded with an air bubble or 2 and the other was a Lego to store shipping box (which contained 2). I dont mind receiving Lego in the large Lego (labeled lego) packaging boxes if they are packaged and padded well (from ebay or amazon or lego)

The most interesting aspect of the order was that they didnt ship until Wed.

Apparently ToysRUs thinks that free shipping means crap shipping.

Just got my order of three Y-Wings.

Smashed, all 3 of them.
Soon as I saw the box, I knew it was bad: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/833/dsc04340k.jpg

Sigh, off to their customer service to see what to do with this mess. lets hope the other order comes in better...

Yeah, similar to what I experienced. The cardboard on those large boxes can be bad, like supple leather. When I ship sets I buy boxes from Uline that are way better than the TRU boxes and on part with the ones from S@H (who is the best of all of the online Lego sellers in terms of quality shipping materials). Plus the packers are doing them in a hurry.

I noticed most of my orders come from Exel, which is a logistics company that TRU outsources with for warehouse/fulfillment operations. I had a friend who worked for Exel as a warehouse worker...he told me lots of horror stories about accidents involving damaged products in the warehouse. Those accidents could happen for any fulfillment operation, but it is key to note that a 3rd party isn't as likely as the retailer to have a vested interest in keeping product damage low or packing great.

I work in corporate for one of the largest retailers in the country and we do our own fulfillment in-house, so the workers care a bit more about the customer experience and pack better/take the smashed products out first.

Just an update, I just received my 3 palpatines arrests. All are in pretty much mint condition...a slight scuff on the corner of one but, all is good.

3 of them for 180 dollars total out the door. No tax and 100% free shipping, I'm happy with my purchase even though I really wanted a death star. :-|

Now to decide if I build one for my collection or sell all 3...I usually limit myself to original movie starwars sets but I like Palpatine..his force lightning and gold hilt lightsaber are sweet...and its not a ship. I'm torn. Maybe I'll save one in the box and decide later...

Just got my shipment in today (2) death star, (1) super star destroyer, (3) batcave. All in great condition with no dents, no rips. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. It was a great deal as long as you keep bugging them about the error.

Just thought I'd throw this out there...in case anyone wants to recoup some of their losses and would like 200 bucks and 2 Palpatines arrests in exchange for 1 death star we could probably work something out...

I might consider that deal. However the box of the Deathstar has a slightly banged up corner.

The amount of people in this thread that feel they are entitled to a non-existent sale on every product TRU carries online and in-stores is pitiful. The terms of the deal are clearly stated in the print ad for stores and online for those sales. There was no error in the sale. Every print ad has fine print, radio ads have the guy talking too fast at the end, tv ads have the print you can't read, etc... If this is the direction our community/future generations are headed than I'm worried were the LEGO community/our country are headed...

Just for the heck of it, i printed out the bar codes for DS, SSD, Fire Brigade, and Tower Bridge. They all scanned up with prices match online, AND the promo B2G1F DID show up as well. So now what kind of excuse would TRU online have? I wish my phone could take pictures for sharing with you guys.
And yes, even the Mindstorm also rings up B2G1F

Would be a smoking gun except for the disclaimer, "Additional exclusions apply online." TRU definitely has questionable practices and I'm disappointed modulars were not included. Still got some good deals, just not the one I wanted. I accept it for what it is and will move on and give most of my business to other retailers I respect more.

BUY 2 GET THE THIRD FREE ALL LEGO construction sets & board games*
*Excludes Ninjago, Technic, Friends, video games & accessories.

What other fine print? I didn't see a fine print in the ad excluding other sets that were not listed above. What you should worry about is letting these companies put up misleading ads and try to use their terms of conditions to supersede everything else.

There isn't any fine print in the ad. I posted this a few days ago:

1) The printed advertisement clearly states "ALL LEGO (excluding Ninjago, Technic, Friends, video games, accessories)."

2) There is nothing excluding the website from sales.

3) The printed ad even states that the sales prices are available online starting at 9am Eastern.

4) Nothing in the printed ad says that the promotion may be modified or cancelled at any time.

The printed ad you are referring to is for brick and mortar stores. Most businesses probably keep separate books for online and brick & mortar business units. If the ad stated at the top TRU and TRU online this discussion would be over. TRU doesn't readily stock the items WE ALL, myself included, wanted to be part of the sale in stores. They wanted to exclude these from the sale so they programmed them out of the online portion. They indicated which of the online sets qualified for the sale with a 'see details' hyperlink after each online mention of the sale. The fact that people complained left and right without reading the details is my issue.
