My comments:
I purchased this kit back in November during Black Friday to receive 10% off. Back then it was $59.99. It has since been reduced to $39.99, which is a much more reasonable price, still not great but it works out to about $4 per person. My daughter turned 6 when we used this.
Box front: The lid flips up and you can see inside, but I didn't take a photo.
Back of box:
Inner Tray: you get postcard style invites, thank yous, name tags, a magnet and the minifigure "sets" with a set of builders tips and a member card.
Invite: Someone brilliant made these postcards (with a place for the stamp) but did not leave a place to write the party-goer's name and address. I did not end up using these, but made my own invite because they seemed silly.
Thank you notes: This is slightly better b/c you could squeeze an address over on the right. I had my daugher fill these in and we mailed them in an envelope since her writing is large.
Card: I wasn't sure what to do with this so I had all the guests sign it as a little guest book.
The interior has some serious 3D ;) - pop up style!
The minifigure packs: They come with a party favor pack...a minifig, lenticular builder's license and a "booklet". The figure is the main reason I bought the pack. BUT it is a boy figure. My daughter was not thrilled that it was a boy. I took them to the Lego store and they did let me swap out a few hair pieces for girl hair. I should have asked for the faces too but it was very last minute. The buider's license card is fun, but not that useful. The "booklet" is a joke. Seriously one sheet, very basic, pretty useless, the back has graph paper.
The name tag is also useless. A Sharpie marker would NOT write on it...for some reason the ink did not adhere. I also could not use a regular pen or marker. I ended up printing stickers with a label maker. I used them on the goody bags since my daugher knew everyone's name at her party ;)

Here is a little scene with the magnet, cake, presents and "my daughter in lego", which I used as our basis for our invitation.
Conclusion:
You can make nicer/more creative invites yourself. I like the figures and the magnet the best. There really are too many "cons" to recommend this. I basically bought it for the figures. The fact that the figure is a male is not great for girls. I was able to switch out what I needed at the store for my daughter and the girls at the party and the boys got the original boy figure. I did not feel the minifigure was enough as a party favor so I ended up buying the Party Favor Kit (review to follow) and some Series 4 minifigures to supplement it.
Lego really needs to work on this kit if they want it to sell. I have sent them comments via e-mail since I was disappointed in how useless most of the kit was for us.
It is no longer available at LEGO shop at home. I remember it being discounted. I did a good search for 852998 Birthday Party Kit and found it at Amazon but it was for 79.95 (free shipping but that is about $20 over its original US retail price). Maybe you can get lucky searching other places. Good luck
