Sorry to ask the most basic of questions, but I'm looking for a good set that just has a mix of pieces like when I was a kid. Can anyone recommend something with a lot of the 4x2 bricks primarily but also larger and smaller pieces? Most of the sets I see- and I think there are some relatively new "mixed" sets, seem to have reviews that claim there are way too many small pieces. We have enough of the small pieces from Harry Potter and Superhero sets; I want some pure imagination pieces that don't necessarily lend themselves to a particular trademarked character. Thank you!

There are a few boxes of basic bricks available. The best deals for these are usually around Black Friday and Christmas sales though. e.g. http://brickset.com/sets/5749-1 was offered by Walmart for $15 in 2012, and http://brickset.com/sets/4630-1 was offered by TRU for $30 in 2013.
The 'builders of tomorrow' set is one of the few that is available year-round, http://brickset.com/sets/6177-1, but its not that great a value for the bricks that it includes.

If you don't need new, buying used bricks in bulk is usually the cheapest route.

You can usually buy new 2x4 bricks at the Lego store via the pick a brick wall 15.99 for the large bucket and 7.99 for the small bucket - often this is cheaper than buying your bricks in a set. On you tube there are some people who have posted videos on how to most efficiently pack a bucket too. SpaceViking is correct in that more often than not buying used bricks in bulk is the cheapest route.
