Best Modular for creating new buildings

I am currently looking buying a couple of MOC instructions and was looking at pick a brick for the pieces needed and wondered if any existing LEGO set might be a good base to get. I do not want to break down my existing buildings to use as pieces. I do have the Haunted House that I could use as it is put away but also thought that Pet Shop might be a good one because of the colors. Or maybe an extra Haunted House? Thoughts?

I think it depends on what elements you want to include in your new buildings. I know that I've seen at least one place to puchase plans to reuse modular's to build something new.

I have purchased a couple of the instructions and now need to find all the pieces to build them. I can't bring myself to breakdown my existing modulars. I was thinking that maybe getting a second pet shop would be a good way to build up some stock for misc buildings. I also like the haunted house because of the green and hinges. Just didn't know if others had opinion on what would be a good set to get for parts or if just pick a brick is the way to go. I have to say that I do love the new modular and might have to grab another and maybe another pet shop during the next VIP promotion.

If you upload the parts lists for the instructions that you have, it will tell you which sets have the most common pieces. It also has good options for 'relaxing' the matches: you can set it to look for pieces in colors that are a close match, for example.

As for sources of bulk bricks for MOCs, pick-a-brick can be an expensive route. You should also look at bricklink.com and brickowl.com if there is something specific you need, and the auction sites (ebay.com and shopgoodwill.com) if you are going for bulk bricks without specific needs.
