Anyone buy a few DS's and wish they had bought more Hogwarts Castles with their money instead? Maybe I am being impatient but when the heck is the DS going to be retired and will it fetch profits eventually? Just seems like it has been around for so long the market is saturated. Anyone concur? Maybe I am way off base...

I'm very mixed about the ds and ssd myself. I agree the market feels saturated with them. Plus its been out stop long those serious collectors who want one have either decided to pony up our decided its out of their price range and definitely won't buy a out gets higher. It id the friggin death star which is perhaps the most iconic set of all... Plus the massive amount of minifigs. I don't think it weep get the prices the falcon does, but should be a $1000 set if you're willing to hold it long enough

just be patient! or simply sell them and buy something you know is retired/retiring!

perhaps you can set up a trade with someone.

My rule of thumb with big sets especially, only buy them when you know they are gone or about to. Or, only bite when you can get the big sets for 30% off or more.

I don't have any death stars but I am sitting on 3 fire brigade. I bought them 2 years ago for $90 each so it wasnt a huge sink.

Death Star will do great once its EOL. its going to take a while though!

last year everyone was buying the $12 clearance Ninjago Nuckal's ATV during clearance and then impatiently sold them all off for next to nothing or even returned them in some cases to Walmart!

I ended up with countless number of those suckers and waited patiently till christmas and tripled/quadrupled my profits.

Patience is key and not thinking about it too much. otherwise you conjecture and speculate and worry and make silly business decisions in the end.

True. I did end up getting 2 of my DS's for 350. I still wish I would have bought more Hogwarts Castles and even better Imperial Flagships. I have a stockload of Star Wars sets from 2010-2011 of around $4,000 invested not including the DS. I got a bit strapped for cash during xmas and ended up selling my turbo tank, republic frigate, and Diagon Alley for 3x what i bought them for but surely I could have gotten more. Ah well...don't want to be greedy ;)

Hopefully the DS will retire soon.

I disagree. I don't think the DS will ever hit 1000$ in any reasonable amount of time (I'd be surprised if it hit 600$ in the next 5 years). Maybe it will spike slightly whenever it is finally retired but then the thousands of them that people have been saving to sell on the after market will drive the price back down. They are on sale pretty often in the 350$ range, sometimes less...got the one I have for display for 335$.

I believe it is the longest running star wars set...possibly longest licensed theme set ever? Maybe someone can correct me?

Investing is always a risk. The DS is one that I feel like you might as well sell off to recoup your initial investment. You might end up waiting a very long time to make a very small profit if you don't.

There is potential in truly good Star Wars UCS sets

and death star is one of the best.

don't forget , 5 years from now we'll be right in the middle of a whole new Star Wars trilogy and media/merchandise blitz when its likely original trilogy Lego will be coveted, especially UCS.

I honestly can't quite tell if you are trolling or not about the "$600 in 5 years" statement. But inflation alone would warrant USD price higher than that at RRP. hehe but I absolutely hear what you are saying!

Fortunately we are a few years from the bubble hitting the "ceiling" and popping which gives Deathstar wiggle room, imho.

Harry Potter has yet to see a season of EOL. Along with first wave of Superheroes going EoL, we still have some time which I think means Deathstar will be solid as long as it does in fact, reach the end of its line within a year or so.

If Deathstar eol's before the majority of first wave Super heroes (and Lotr) go eol, we can be safe to measure that Deathstar will do well. Then we also have about a 2 year period before Star Wars episode 7 media blitz, which will be something else entirely!

But if Deathstar is still in production after the first wave of Marvel Superheroes retires, there will be a whole new crop of investors/speculators from the comic book world that might also stock up on Deathstars! comic collectors will see what Supes vs Lex power suit set and wolverine chopper are going for and immediately jump on board. haha no doubt

I know this site, and this forum in particular are focused on investing, but i can't tell you how THRILLED I am that this set was not retired. I am an original trilogy kid (35 years young) so even though i had no idea this thing was released back in 2006 or whenever, I was still able to afford it 6 years later when i discovered it this fall.

This set is too good to retire, and there are probably TONS of people like me out there who are discovering SW legos over the next few years with the re-vitalization of the franchise.

I only wish the UCS Star Destroyer and other sets were still available at a reasonable price, but now that i see how the 'game' is played i've stocked up on a few sets at clearance so maybe i can afford some of the expensive retired sets you guys have already stockpiled :)

The 600 number was pure speculation, I admit. If it does happen to be discontinued in the next year or so I would think you would probably end up being right that there is a good chance it goes much higher then that.

I just don't see any indication that it will stop being produced any time soon. That one set definitely is the exception to the rule.

I could see it being produced for multiple years to come (This is where I think we differ on our opinion...which also explains our price variance). I could see it very easily being produced until 2015 when the new movie is released, maybe it will get phased out shortly after...2016.

I could be wrong, I can't see the future, but if there is any 1 set that will go against the standard rules of production it is the DS...because it has already...and I don't see that changing anytime soon. Pair that with the fact that, because it has been around so long, people have acquired a ton of them to sell later, I can't see the price inflating as quickly as some other sets that it would normally be compared to.

Just check the price of this Death Star 10188 and it's like $500CAD on Lego store. Is that the original price when it came out? or did Lego inflated the price? I am thinking of picking up one myself but don't know if I should wait for a 'sale' from Toys R US.
