Technic set with lots of gears?

For the price, the "Crazy Action Contraptions" book is a good start for simple Technic machines:

For a bigger set, I can recommend the Pick-Up Tow Truck http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?S=9395-1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; which we recently built at our house. The gearing mechanisms on that are quite impressive and cover a good range of what lego gears can do. There is a separate assembly each for the steering, 'drive train' (transferring rear-wheel rotation to the pistons in the 'engine'), tow hook, and lift arm, plus a mechanism to switch between the last two. The set/build is a bit complicated, though, and probably better suited for 12 years or up---my nine-year-old lost interest pretty quickly, and he's a lego fanatic. If the truck is of little interest, you could look through the online instructions for the components that make up each assembly and then buy the individual parts from bricklink sellers.


You might also look for a FIRST LEGO League group in your area. While the focus is on robotics, gearing is a major component of the builds.

because it is inexpensive and it will help you determine whether your child likes to
and has an aptitude for mechanics...

wrt to the newer non motorized Technic models that you can find at retail store
this one looks like it has the most clever gearing mechanisms...
clutch mechanisms are always sooo cool ..

I would recommend the

Lego Education - Simple and Motorized Mechanism Base set, MRSP 139.95
I have this kit - the container it comes in is very useful for holding legos too!
This kit is a launch/starting point for other add-on kits to teach other stuff as well.
It can be supplemented with elementary and middle shool educational programming material too.

My son is almost 4 and always the tries to get the gear sets from Learning Resources to work with his LEGOs.
Crazy Action Contraptions sounds like a perfect place to start.
