The next modular is already coming, it is called Town Hall.

Everyone expects Fire Brigrade to go, so there is plenty of that stockpiled, but NO one expected Grand Emporium to go.

I talked to the store manager at my local Lego store, she has been there since it opened and she was downright shocked when GE was marked "sold out" over the weekend.

She had her regular reseller buyers all come in within a few hours and clean her out of all the remaining GE stock, I missed them by an hour. :(

Oh well, I ordered two of them backordered from S@H, we'll see if I get them.

Grand Emporium is now also sold out at Target.com. Target, Walmart, TRU, Amazon are all OOS and S@H is backordered...my local shop was out of them as well.

Yes you can order it again, but they usually do 1 final 'back order' run before the "Sold Out" becomes permanent. I watched it happen last year on a few sets I was hoping would get discounted after Christmas, thinking along your logic... "oh, back-orders mean it's not discontinued." I ended up paying over MSRP instead of MSRP and VIP points via S@H on the Farm and other sets last year because of it.

The Modulars are sets that instantly go up in price after discontinuation, and these (especially GE IMO) will jump quick, so it's a good investment regardless. Better to pull the trigger now on some kind of discount (heck, even at MSRP), then to miss it and pay more later.
I have mixed feelings about new releases: I can't wait to see and get the new sets... but I can't figure out where I'm gonna put them or store them.

Good point, which is why I ordered 2 more of them last night while the 10% was still in effect.

Probably should have bought 10 of them, but I've spent so much on Lego recently, my credit card was crying in the corner. ;)

I did buy 2 more Fire Brigade as well, because I'm still convinced that set is going, I think that once Town Hall comes out next year, both Fire Brigade and Grand Emporium will retire, so I'm good either way, but GE will go up in price I think faster than FB, because everyone EXPECTS FB to retire now. :)

Still hoping for a sale after Christmas on the Modulars - I'm hoping that they will be at least 25% off during their Christmas eve sale...

Does anyone have pics of the Town Hall one already?

Star Wars is the theme that always throws me. Sometimes only 1 year, sometimes 2, sometimes 5. I personally think that with the SSD out, the Death Star goes away after Xmas... I've been saying for a while it's gone this year, and I could be wrong.

Just called Lego and they have an odd message, offices closed due to unforeseen circumstances. Huh? I still have this mystery order and pending charge on my cc that I would like cleared up.

Anyway, I got suckered into buying some 10188s when Amazon looked to be running out and listed the set as discontinued. Lesson learned there. I still think that set will be a turkey once it does sell out. My theory is they won't kill it until they have a suitable replacement and by that I mean a killer marquee SW themed playset type of set. IOW not a ship like the SSD. Maybe a proper Cloud City, that would be cool. I do hope I am wrong and you are right and we see 10188 go away this year.

What sets do you think will be clearanced in Jan?

Post by mvas11 » Tue Nov 29, 2011 11:03 am

After the black friday sales I started thinking about the next big sales and that would be the Jan. clearance. I was thinking that any left over PQ would be clearanced as would the POTC sets. What do you guys think?

-SW (whatever's left of 2010 sets, maybe a few 2011)

-Harry Potter (all of it, whatever's left)
-City (whatever's left of 2010 sets, maybe sets from winter wave)
-Creator/Technic (whatever's left of 2010 sets, maybe a few from this years)
-Duplo ( :eh: )
-Games (winter wave, maybe Heroica too)
-POTC (the entire wave, including the BP)

One thing for sure thats getting discontinued are the City and Star Wars Advent Calendars. I can see the Star Wars one fetching for high sums in the future (especially if LEGO doesn't make another one next year).

Off-Road Power is sold out??? Jeez... I really hope someone in my wife's family got that for me (we did Secret Santa with them this year). If not, hopefully it's just a low-stock situation, not a discontinuance situation.

I don't think that they'll do one next year - they will probably have a different theme next year - given their Super Heroes lineup that's what it will probably be.

I am sure the Star Wars Advent calendars will be fetching crazy sums next year... :-D time to stock-up if you still can ;-)

I'm glad the Emporium went from sold out to out of stock. Had me worried for a couple days!

edit: I'm tempted to order it now and wait until the 17th but hearing all the stories about how often they fudge orders and tie up funds on CC's makes me hesitant.

GE isn't going to retire just yet.

Since its one of the newer Modulars its just selling fast this holiday season.

Its currently one of the hot Lego Christmas items.

They will likely sell for $200-$250 next few weeks.

Stock will be replenished after holidays.

Who knows what will retire? Guess we just wait and see what TLG decides.

Well looks like Grand Emporium is back in stock. So much for the Lego rep who told me it was sold out for good on Nov 27th.

I stopped believing anything S@H lego reps,LEGO retail merchandising temps(you know, the seasonal temps that restock TRU Brick and Mortars from time to time) and Lego Store Employees long ago.

I'm usually the one that informs them.

TLG uses a Temp Agency to hire and employee many people in North America. The entire process is pretty horrible but it keeps TLG from having to go Corporate. Funny how TLG relies on other corporations to keep themselves from becoming incorporated. sort of defeats the purpose don' it?

What it means for us is that most of Lego employees are clueless.

The Lego Certified Professionals are all cool guys.
Some of the folks at Billund are cool too.

But its not like we can just ask them.

I've always felt the store employees (not temps) were experts at dodging direct questions like that if they don't know you beyond the default employee-customer relationship.
