I don't understand a thing about BrickLink part numbers

Post by vynsane » Fri May 27, 2011 1:44 pm

I'm trying to inventory the Jack Sparrow Voodoo Doll minifigure and it's just the most complicated mess I've ever encountered. Does anyone have a tried-and-true way to add new pieces (specifically printed minifigure pieces) into the BL database? The numbering convention is what's totally throwing me off. Their "simple description" is:
Naming Convention:
{ Base Part No. }{ Mold Variant }{ Pattern Constant }{ Pattern Sequential No. }{ Assembly Constant }{ Assembly Sequential No. }
Oh, yeah, no problem. :roll:

So, anyway... is there a way to search for the next item number in the sequence? I've tried searching for partial part numbers, but it apparently doesn't search for partial matches.
ALL HAIL THE BLACTRON EMPIRE!

I am new, but I:
1) Use this webpage: http://www.toysperiod.com/lego-set-reference/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
2) enter the sets name in the "Search LEGO Set Reference" field3
3) get the part number

Also you can go to the Lego webpage and download the PDF for the set. Sometimes numbers are there in the back.
