Which Space Police set - for a gift?

This is for a 5 year old boy. I was told he would love any Space Police set. I have no idea which one to get or if some are better for others in terms of play. I'd like to spend $30-40.

I saw the following at TRU:

Sorry, I should have mentioned...he has none of them at the moment so this would be the first.. however he is not a Lego novice, they've been focusing on Star Wars.

TRU is suppose to have a BOGO50% off coming up on Sunday, maybe they would still have some SP3 sets in stock. Then you could hit your target amount easily.

Also Target.com has undercover cruiser on sale for 20.98.

I did read about the possible BOGO50% so that's why I'm waiting, I actually have some time before we need the gift.

Do any of the sets have more "wow" or "fun" factor than others?

Officially May 10th, but Tru will most likly get them early.

My TRU has Hyperspeed Pursuit on clearance for $39.99, so it would be $30 or so after the bogo50. (25% off). That one has 2 ships and would be a lot of bang for the buck. Undercover cruiser has a "transforming" feature which is pretty interesting. Of course I'd prefer Lunar Limo with "Brick Daddy" but the 5 year old parents might not appreciate that :)

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm hoping they have the BOGO50% tomorrow as my TRU did have plenty of sets.

I would suggest "Hyperspeed Pursuit" if it is not over your budget. Both spaceships come with unique features and are about the same physical size, which is fun to play with. The most important is that no underdog team there.

If you can find it and if it is in your budget range, the best SP3 set by far is the Lunar Limo. I've got a review on this site for it. It is by far the coolest set there I think, although it does lack another ship in the set, which could hurt playability issues, but honestly I think an enterprising 5 year old can have fun with it regardless : )

I ended up getting Undercover Cruiser and Smash and Grab at Target.com since they are on clearance (both for about $30 with shipping and tax). If he likes these, I'll start looking for Hyperspeed Pursuit for Christmas. Thanks for the feedback!

Bear in mind 'Hyperspeed Pursuit' is older than 'Undercover Cruiser' and 'Smash n Grab' - it came out in 2009, whereas the two you just bought on clearance came out in 2010. It may get harder and harder to obtain 'Hyperspeed Pursuit', so if you see it, grab it (especially for a good price). I got a couple of them on clearance last year at my local Target.

That said, the two sets you got are a great value at that price, and will afford a LOT of play value pitted against each other. 'Undercover Cruiser' features a sizable Space Police ship which is accompanied by a small 'speederbike' type of 'bad guy' vehicle, whereas 'Smash n Grab' is a medium-sized 'bad guy' vehicle which includes another Space Police commando (who has nothing but a freeze-ray gun, a jet pack, and true grit and determination as his allies ;) ). The two 'main' vehicles from each set are more evenly matched, which will be a lot of fun for the little one.

Vynsane and legitmatealex - thanks for the feedback on the other two sets. I'll definitely keep my eyes open for those on sale somewhere to give on another occassion. I'm pleased that I got him two sets worth $50 for $30...I love a good deal and I think he will be thrilled. I'll be watching clearances and the Sales & Deals forum for sure!
