Re: New box sizes?
The extra penny is so people save a cent and buy the cheaper one to get them out of the way.
There is a reason for the bigger boxes, more eye space. Sure they take up more shelf space, but it evens out with the people seeing the bigger boxes. I'm amazed by how small the $5 sets are, they are tiny little boxes.

Re: New box sizes?
guess the major difference between adults and kids friends... i can understand that kids would want to go for the largest possible one... even there are mostly empty space in the box... for an adult or collector... definitely would want the smaller boxes...
Re: New box sizes?
I also think that TLG doesn't want to make the boxes too small since the larger boxes probably discourage/help prevent theft.
Re: New box sizes?
well, then they have to figure out better way to seal the boxes... very seldom people would steal the whole box.. they usually open it up and get the content inside...
with the big box = prevent theft.. then TLG should make big boxes for the minifigures series then

I was at my local Lego store today and saw these. They are part of a new "Green" initiative that Lego is rolling out. Some Target, Wal-Mart, and Lego stores will be using these smaller packages. Places like Toys R Us will not be using these "Green" boxes. Go figure.

Lego doesn't care about adults or collectors when it comes to box size.super12 wrote:. for an adult or collector... definitely would want the smaller boxes...
LEGO sales come from a little kid seeing the box and going "Mommie I want this!" and the mom thinking it's a decent deal for a set because of a huge box. There are several reasons for box sizes and designs that you and I won't care about. We go into a store looking for certain sets, a huge box or a tiny one we want what we want. Children and parents aren't the same way.
And theft of the minifigures is huge in my area. One night at TRU I saw 3-4 empty bags and a pair of light blue legs that were stuck in a shelf. Anything $49.99 or over at TRU is supposed to have the anti steal sticker on it, but you can just rip or cut the tape on the box and steal what you want.

Re: New box sizes?
That new smaller box is more like the actual size of the ship. In the last few waves, I notice that many of these ships have been enlarged quite a bit compared to the actual size. I have the Bounty Assault Gunship and it does not look like a $50 set to me. I guess Lego wanted to charge the same amount for a smaller set so boxes were so big.cowbug wrote:![]()
Wow. Its obvious TRU wants to charge more.keland wrote:I was at my local Lego store today and saw these. They are part of a new "Green" initiative that Lego is rolling out. I guess I figured if something like the Grand Emporium was stuffed in a box 1/2 its size people might be more likely to steal the whole thing. At the current size you'd have a hard time hiding it under your coat.super12 wrote:well, then they have to figure out better way to seal the boxes... very seldom people would steal the whole box.. they usually open it up and get the content inside...

I didn't realize people really broke open the boxes while in the store and stole parts. I heard (here) that people bought it and then took stuff out and re-sealed.
And the minifigures as a whole are "inexpensive" so I wouldn't expect a big package to prevent theft. Although I suppose you are right that those might be the more likely to be stolen.

Most thieves go after the high dollar minifigs like starwars. No worries on city sets. Target has been known to put these sets back on sale on a mark down prices after they know bags were missing. When it comes to SW sets on sale at Target, I usually pass on the larger sets as the figures are rarer.

ahh I get it now. We don't have enough interest in SW here to buy the sets...really I'm just trying to keep the Lego fray to a minimum here. ;)slacker wrote:atmail

I'm really surprised then that Lego doesn't seal the sets with glue and a tab, like on some of the less expensive sets to make it evident if tampering occurred
Re: New box sizes?
This is quite exciting. This means you probably wont go to a store and find out they are out of stock of that one lego you wanted and most likely the legos will be cheaper.

The size - price dimension is one that retailers like to exploit a lot. I mean you wouldn't pay $100 for the huge castle if it came in a dinky box would you? Try to think like a child, it comes in a bigger box, he figures there must be more in it.
I'm all for this new box size. I keep all the boxes and they take up a huge amount of storage space.

I saw the new small boxes today at the LEGO store. I think it was pretty much across all Themes. Was fun checking them all out. The Atlantis HQ is waaay smaller - although thicker of course. Harry Potter the Burrow new box was neat also.

Just got home from the same WalMart and they were doing a massive store wide re-stock/re-organization so I checked out the lego section and there were A LOT more sets with smaller packaging, above are a couple examples of the new battle pack sizes, they are roughly 4.5 inches by 5 inches, they also had Pharoes Quest sets, Harry Potter sets, Toy Story (as shown), more Star Wars, Imperial V-wing in the same size box as the Starfighter, they had not only new Clone and Mando battle pack's but both the Hoth battle pack's were in smaller boxes. Even the Clone Turbo Tank box appeared to be smaller, still tall but not as long. I did not see any of the normal size boxes for the sets that had smaller boxes, I checked the clearance aisle but did not see any, not sure what happened to them, I doubt they sold them all in a few days, unless they did go on sale and I missed them. I think they look a lot better and make a lot more sense. Sorry I don't have exact dimensions but I imagine they will be rolling out all over pretty soon.
Re: New box sizes?
I kinda lost track of them all but I think Hogwarts Castle and City Fire Station were in smaller boxes. Was crazy!
