I doubt LEGO will ever be able to truly please the Blacktron I fans in the future. Blacktron I is the darkest/twisted/hardcore theme they've ever done IMHO and I don't think many regular happy-joy fans like it. Apparently it didn't go well since only 5 sets were made (not counting Meteor Monitor because of white pieces). Weren't they going to make a re-issue of Battrax? What ever happened to that? Was it just an unfounded rumor.

Does anyone feel the way I do? Space died after 1989 for me when there was no longer Classic, Futuron, Space Police I, and Blacktron I. Space Police II, Blacktron II, M-Tron, etc were just ugly to me and it only got worse. The only thing that saved them was the SW license, but sometimes I find that having that now would prevent them from making something as cool as Classic, Futuron, Space Police I, and Blacktron I again. The new City [NASA] Space theme is okay and better than anything since 1989, but still not what I'm looking for.

Well, I definitely love Space. I'm a fan of the mid-classic era, which starts with "re-runs" (SPII, Blacktron II), and goes through some exploration and espionage, plus one all-too-small army (I consider 1991-1996 (but not Roboforce) to be mid-classic. Then there's the late classic era, as I like to call it, with one crappy theme (Roboforce), plus two decent themes (UFO, Insectoids). I'm not sure if Life on Mars fits in with it-it's similar to the recent stand-alone subthemes. I like the new themes, but they just aren't the same. I think that Mars Mission is actually dark, if you look into it-is it really the humans who are bad? Aren't they stealing the alien's crystals? Is it really bad for the aliens to fight back, killing them? Isn't it us who are the bad ones, stealing from them? I love the Classic themes most of all (I consider M-Tron to be one of these-stuff really changes with Blacktron 2, but M-Tron has an older feel)-Classic Space, Futuron, Blacktron, SPI, and M-Tron. I think that many of those sets aren't good, but there are some true gems within them. I'd say that Batman and Spider-Man are much darker than Blacktron (although they don't go into it at all in Spider-Man, and barely touch it in Batman). Indiana Jones is also dark (although not as much).

I grew up with classic space Lego for me the eras would be the spacemen with solid color uniforms and helmets with out visors. The next generation would be any spacer with a smilie face until we hit SPII. M torn was a favorite. From SPII, Iceplanet spyruis, unitron and exploriens we get more specialized factions or tribes. The aliens were fun but I'm talking about insects and UFO mars mission was not as Interesting and more like a hodgepodge of LegoTown launch command and roboforce.

The modern SPIII are neat in use of color schemes but their opposition are comic book robbers and not much of a threat to galactic peace that could use a galactic mediator starship to resolve. I do have hope in the cmf villain sporting the BT2 B logo on his suit, much more promising than purple zoot suit guy.

MOD NOTE: I figured this was a derailment of the CMFs4 topic but a worthwhile discussion, so I broke it off, intended to post a response and then got side-tracked building "Battle of Alamut" with my daughter (which is an AWESOME set, btw).

As near as I can tell, I stopped collecting LEGO completely around 1992, with a major decline in my interest by 1990. I saw my brother receive some of the SPACE stuff after that and it never really clicked with me. The only thing I could see getting into was M-Tron. Other than that, it left me cold.

Last Christmas saw my major resurgence of interest in LEGO. The initial inklings happened as I played the LEGO video games, and thought it might be cool to get one set that represented each game (little did I know how hard that would be with Batman  )

Once I saw the Indiana Jones sets and the Midi-Scale Millenium Falcon I was really psyched, and then I discovered Space Police III via LEGO S@H and went hog wild. In the past year I've gathered all but two of the SP3 sets, among a slew of other themes. I also grabbed a couple of long-lost SPACE sets (6890 Cosmic Cruiser and 6941 Blacktron Battrax) and discovered BrickLink.

With the popularity of movements like Neo Blacktron, and Neo-Classic Space, the fact that the logo on Shuttle Adventure and the upcoming NASA line has a ship and swoosh reminiscent of the Classic Space logo, and the fact that so many translucent yellow pieces are showing up next year makes me confident that we'll see something in the vein of CS sometime in the future.

The way I'd like to see it happen is for the NASA line to evolve beyond orbital exploration into a something like Chris Giddens' Pre-Classic Space that's all about exploring our extended Solar System, and then beyond that to tie into revivals/re-envisionings of classic themes.

Most definitely not. LEGO is too caught up in creating new themes that feature on more action moves rather than going on against humans vs humans. Have you noticed that in the space themes? They don't do human vs human much more, and if they do its usually super simple 'these guys are good those guys are bad.'

They have the Space Villain who has a Blacktron II Logo, as well as Rench who also has one on his (epic) suit which is a combo of 1 AND 2.The opposition is lame, I have to agree-while I like Aliens, the cartoony-ness of them just makes it inevitable that they fail at attempts-they have to be lame. And the ships, while not bad, are lacking in some things-they look more like something out of a cartoon, and seem a bit toned-down (at least, that's my opinion on the curved shapes of these). The prisoner pods are built for playability-while there WAS playability in old sets, most of it involved imagining and playing around with it. Now there are tons of features, which, while not bad, can sometimes make it unrealistic.

It would be really cool to have a theme tie back into Classic Space-the issue is that the new style, full of curves, slopes, and detail, is in contrast with the nearly-barebones, angular, and less detailed, ships of Classic Space. My favorite ones are the ones that look sleek and angular-I really don't like all the curved slopes.

The Yellow will be very useful, but only trans yellow windshields will be released with Atlantis.

Well, it would have to proceed into a re-imagined version of Classic Space - kinda like the newest Star Trek... similar in most respects, but updated for the era (maybe less lens flare...)

Well, yes, in the initial 2011 offerings it will only be in Atlantis. I wouldn't count it out in future lines outside of Atlantis, though.

I think there is room for a revival of Space. If anything, Neo Blacktron would be like Agents but in space. What would be a change is instead of just energy-extraction as the main source of tension (a popular theme in Lego - ie: aquazone, power miners, mars mission, etc) but to also have colonization. Idk but maybe colonizing the moon to only encounter aliens of some sort or have an evil organization which seeks to steal and halt the colonizer's plans. I do miss having multiple factions. It does add complexity to the storyline such as the fantasy castle theme prior to kingdoms.

I believe that LoM was a pre-colonization, and LoM and M-Tron also did energy extraction-like things. Classic Space did have some colonization, per it's description by LEGO.

"As a member of a shadowy criminal organization feared throughout the seven galaxies, the Space Villain really knows his outer space bad-guy stuff. He can hotwire a rocket neutron drive in zero-G, melt through solid plasmodic hypersteel with his nova-ray blaster, and sneak past a FuturonCorp security-bot in under 3.6 quarkoids, all while blindfolded."

This was the blurb on the space villian from CF3 minifig bios. Does anyone read FuturonCorp? Futuron? perhaps a revive of classic space imminent =D and if there is Futuron, chances are Blacktron will make a come-back and a remake of our beloved monorail...(sigh) =D

That's not actually saying that they will re-make it. It's just a shout-out to the old theme. They also said Spyrius rules on the ship in the Galactic Enforcer and I think there is an M-Tron mention in another set.

Epic damage. That was the set I wanted when I started with legos in the mid 80s.

Even when I wasn't into Lego, I still wanted monorail. However the Disastrous results of the Space Skulls and Star Justice seems to put a major cooling on a true classic space release. Seriously, these sets are still around for less than MSRP.

I think the Space Skulls stank. The Star Justice wasn't bad....but those were all fan designed.

I really wouldn't lump Star Justice/Space Skulls in with Classic Space.

I would go so far as to say the first Space Police series was the last Classic Space theme, which would include the original Space theme, Futuron, Blacktron, and SP1. Classic Space didn't exist after 1990. Everything up to that point felt like a progression, unified in some way. Everything afterward just felt... different. I don't know how to quantify it any more than that. The only things that might have felt like a a part of CS were Mars Mission and SP3, but more as homages/references than outright continuations thereof. They both still had more conflict as a plot point (and, really, more plot in general) than Classic Space.

I think the most recent things you can point to as 'classic' Space might be the Lunar Limo with its Trans Yellow windows. Some of the CMFs might apply too.
