UFO Theme Facts, Fiction, and Opinions

A little background:
UFO was a LEGO theme first released in 1997. It succeeded Exploriens and preceded Insectoids. As a theme, it was controversial-I don't know how, but it is considered one of LEGO's most controversial themes. It has a nebulous storyline, with UFO aliens and droids. They aren't known to be an enemy of any of the other factions. There were sets released as Kabaya promotions, and a special TRU UFO set with a large-size alien mask. UFO appeared in LEGO racers as part of one of the harder tracks, but had no other major appearances.

What I think about the theme: I think the the theme was great. It wasn't amazing, but it had a lot of really great stuff. For one, there were flying saucers-they were good looking and had some cool functions. They had magnet pieces, and a lot of other great stuff. Best of all, though, are the Minifigures. Take a glance at them. I think the theme has some of the most complex Minifigures and helmets (plus they have really cool armor).

It included some huge printed tile pieces and made funny noises and had lights. Hrmm, the shoulders were cool but you couldn't fit pretty much any other helmet except the ones they came with on it.

I liked them but I wouldn't put them up there as the best space theme by a long shot.

I wasn't aware of the controversy but they were a favorite theme at the tail end of my collection as a kid.

Favorite was the suits and Helmets, the Trans-green or trans-red Alien heads, and the saucer pieces.

My first exposure was the 6816 Cyber Blaster that appeared on the racks before the other sets. The robot was rather strange looking, and really out of place in my Exploriens base. Later I got the 6818 Cybor Scout, 6836 V-wing fighter 6900 Cyber Saucer, 6902 Space Plane and the 6975 Alien avenger which was I think my birthday present that year.

The avenger was alot more alien looking than the larger 6979 Interstellar Starfighter which looked like a stretched out U.S.S. Enterprise.

I recieved the Technic fiberoptic set some time later so in theory I had the parts with the other UFO sets to build the StarFighter on my own.

You could fit the Insectoids heads on them or the standard Space helmet-as seen in Insectoids or in Alpha Team (Ogel).
